Analysis of Sound Use in Film OTS
28 Days Later
There is little to no sound in the opening to 28 days later, apart from the quiet, diegetic sound of the characters movement, and the low sad guitar of the non diegetic music. The combination of these limited sounds adds to the empty and isolated atmosphere the character is experiencing, walking through empty London streets. The calm yet sad sound of the music creates a strange peacefulness to the sequence, yet makes it feel very uncomfortable and macabre. This scene and its sound is especially effective due to the contrasting aggression and violence present in the majority of the film. WF
The Conjuring
In the opening scene the majority of the sound initially is diegetic dialogue from the characters. This is to establish backstory for the film while adding some tension by having limited audio, as there is no music. Further into the scene there is some non diegetic music, which is used to build atmosphere and set the tone for the scene. AL
Halloween (1978)
The only audio in the majority of the scene is non diegetic music, ambient and dark in tone, used in order to create a isolated but dark atmosphere, as well as to not give much away about the killer. The first actual use of diegetic dialogue then acts as a reveal, as the victims dialogue signifies she knows the killer. WF
