Throughout the years of horror films/movies being created, several analysts have voiced their opinion on what the genre is about, common occurrences in it and what they think makes the best type of Horror Film.
Wesley also thought that for a horror genre, the scariest places are the places that the audience would feel they are the safest, for example homes, schools and hospitals. This implies that no matter where you are, you're not safe from the killer.

Carroll J. Clover
Carroll J. Clover had a contrasting opinion to Wesley a she believes that the scariest place for a horror setting is somewhere that is old, decaying and has a disturbing history because of the connotations that come a long with it (for example being haunted by somebody who died at the location previously). Clover also believes that killers tend to have had issues with their childhood or are sexually disturbed therefore causing them to be who they are.

Clover raised an important point that is used over all types of horror. Things such as cars, phones, alarms and door bells never work within horror films, leaving the characters vulnerable and with no chance of getting help or escaping the killer. Another noticeable point is that stereotypically the female main character is who would survive in horror films, coincidently, this person is also rarely shown in the opening title sequences of the films.
Kaminsky noticed that guns are never used in horror films and instead knives, chainsaws, sickles and other melee weapons are used by the killer as it makes the act more personal and close up (he thought that the weapons can be seen as 'extensions of their own body', an extreme and literal example of this is the killer 'Freddy 'Krueger' who actually creates gloves with knives attached to be worn by himself making his hands be the weapon(s).
